Bravo, Matt, for linking to the superb piece by Edward Luttwak. At last, someone who has broken out of the absurd framework of "cut and run" or persistence in a failing strategy!

The death of Zarqawi puts us at a crucial turning point of our own. Is it really possible to restore some semblance of civil order in Baghdad and the Sunni Triangle? If so, we need more troops there, and now. If it is neither possible, nor desirable, as Luttwak suggests, we need a pull-back (not pull-out) stratgegy that refocuses on our jihadist enemies and away from defending one side (and that probably the wrong side)in a civil war.

This is a difficult choice and we need much more careful arguments, like Luttwak's, exploring the options.
