Reaction Strong to "Blue City Conservatives"

June 24, 2005

My cover story in last week's Seattle Weekly about Seattle's conservatives and Republicans drew many reactions. Here's a partial round-up.

Letters to the Editor in the Weekly.

Commenters also sounded off at story-related posts on Sound Politics, and Rosenblog.

Other bloggers and sites also glommed on to the story. They included:

The Wall Street Journal's Opinion Journal (third item down, "Senseless In Seattle");

The Brothers Judd;

Greg Piper;

Mark Rauterkus;

DJ Entropy;

Mark Nicodemo;

usmcgunny68's AOL Journal;

Ninme;

Ron Hebron;

ArtDish;

Lair of the Infinite Dragon;

Cyber-Conservative;

The Seven Realms;

and

Altweeklies.com.

Some folks liked the piece, others hated it. But they all spelled my name right. The best thing about it, to me: the aftermath got me - and a few like-minded others - thinking about a GOP urban agenda for Seattle.

Oh, I loved it. I thought it was really, really, really good. I would have thought every conservative in Seattle would have clung to it as if to a life saver, alone in wind-tossed shark-infested waters. Folded it up into a little locket to wear close to the heart to ward off scary liberals who might otherwise smell the wrong political persuasion and fear on them.

Very cool -- the appearance on Taranto's blog!

I finally read it yesterday. Really a masterpiece of journalism. Your writing is as smooth as butter; wish I could write like that.

The key point, I think, was not that there are Republicans in Seattle, but just how intolerant so many people in Seattle are. They are the first to scream about multi-cultural, diversity, and all the other politically correct nonsense, but the last to entertain an idea outside the confines of their orthodox box.

By the way, I'm gearing up for the venti triple shot soy mocha, Matt. For sentimental purposes, you should buy it for me near where one of the stations of the $11 billion (and counting) monorail WOULD HAVE been.

In our city, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, we are a bit more human to each other. Nice indeed. That's good. We get weird looks, but not the personal flame-like snubs that you all seem to get in the big city in the NW.

I called myself a "free market Republican." Now I've gone to Libertarian.

Respect is the concept. Give it. Get it. Earn its keep throughout time.
