Tipping Point: Arcata Council Opposes Iraq War

May 10, 2005

Consolidating its position as the nation's local government body most influential on matters of peace and social justice, the Arcata, California City Council, after months of deliberation and most recently, three hours of citizen testimony, has passed a resolution opposing the Iraq War.

White House speechwriters are hard at work, and a nationally-televised response by President George W. Bush is said to be planned for next week. Said to be of particular concern to the Bush Administration are the national implications of certain provisions of the ordinance, namely:

...the resolution...allocates $1,000 per year for a number of activities, including giving information on local services to returning troops, informing Arcata residents about access to free legal advice and counsel if they refuse to go to war and working with local school boards and Humboldt State University to limit military recruiters on campus and asking schools to provide equal time to alternative positions. That task now falls to the soon-to-be renamed Nuclear Weapons Free Zone and Peace Commission.

A pensive nation awaits your response, Mr. President.

Ah, thank God. Something to make me laugh.

You have no idea how much I needed that.

Brilliant.. oppose a war that's been over for more than a year!

I say we move for the Seattle City Council to oppose the Falkland Islands War!

Okay Matt...I can vouch for the fact that they are 'unusual' in Arcata to say the least...but they still aren't nearly as repulsive[or rude] as the idiots in Seattle. One of my sons is a student at Humboldt [we refer to it as the poison ivy-league] and as he said being a republican on that campus...he is the modern day counter culture figure. Funny how things go around.......

WHEW! I can finally come off the fence now!

You just don't know how many dinner parties and other social situations I've been in where the debate turns to the war in Iraq, and I've been forced to follow my conscience and say, "Well, you make some good points there, but we haven't heard what Arcata, California has to say about it yet."

Believe you me, I used to have a lot of really nice friends who failed to understand the Kerry-like nuances of this principled stance.

Now, of course, comes the dramatic, soon-to-be-made-for-TV movie: The brave, handsome bomber pilot has his orders to fly over a known terrorist encampment near Baghdad on a carpet-bombing mission. He has his orders, which trace their authority straight to the Commander in Chief. BUT! Along comes word of this town council decision...

We see the conflicted officer sitting on his bunk, mission orders in one hand, a copy of the San Francisco Chronicle in the other (with Arcata decision as page A1 headline, above the fold)... a tear streams down his cheek as he plaintively cries out to the heavens above, "God! Oh, God! What do I do???"
