1 Dead Hasil Adkins Beats 20 Live Bruce Springsteens, Any 'Ol Day
May 02, 2005
Rosalita, yeh, yeh, yeh. So done it's char-broiled. E-Street Shuffle, yeh, the same. About all the rest of it all? Feh! Bruce Springsteen largely bites, and always did. His faux working-class Jersey shitck has for decades enthralled millions of undiscriminating, underexposed rubes, but just about always left me right on the verge of puking, or nodding off. The actual MUSIC? SO Nowheresville, baby! Some folk know all this, yet manage to catch a faint glimmer why - his insane mass appeal. More at Sunbreak City. As for a REAL original, how 'bout the proto-hillbilly rocker Hasil Adkins? Except, well, The Haze, damn it, is freshly dead. Spike at Spikeco has the story on this underground rockabilly legend, out of WestByGodVirginia - who first started performing in the Eisenhower era. Was still a head of his time, right up 'til the Finnish. Hasil was always an antidote to the corporate musical suckage heinously embodied by The Boss. So y'all, g'wan: Do The Hunch now. Hasil was a good man, even if a weird loner without a major label deal. May his soul rest in peace. Posted by Matt Rosenberg at May 2, 2005 10:47 PM Comments:
I hate Springsteen. Hate 'im, hate 'im. This guy, this multi-millionaire who's been a pampered rock star for thirty years is supposed to be some kind of fount of wisdom about the plight of the working man? Cram it "Boss". And thanks for the link Posted by: Spike at May 3, 2005 08:34 AMThe video's called The Wild World of Hasil Atkins (natch). It really is worth watching. I found it on a website called www.dancingoutlaw.com. Posted by: Spike at May 3, 2005 08:45 AMThe Boss' best days are clearly behind him. And you're right--musically he was never that great. But for awhile, the guy spoke to a large number of people. His music had energy and told the stories of peoples lives in simple ways. There was nothing complicated about it. And his shows were great. He was gonna give it everything he had and he demanded you participate at the same level. Although I don't particularly like most of the music he's done lately, I give him credit for trying to to do new stuff and not completely join the geriatric rock circuit of Sir Paul and The Rolling Stones. Posted by: Steve at May 3, 2005 09:38 AMif you have benn to one of concerts you best go its not all about him its about us together in this world Posted by: lori at May 4, 2005 08:17 AMYes, well said Lori. Posted by: Spike at May 4, 2005 09:40 AMHasil played for my brother when he had his garage rock club, Tiger Mask, going years ago. What a performer he was. Amazing... His passing is a sad loss.
