Sex, Drugs, Sloth and Politics in BC

April 23, 2005

The Sex Party is just the tip of the iceberg. In British Columbia's May 17 elections, candidates are also running from the Marijuana Party; the Work Less Party (motto, "Alarm Clocks Kill Dreams"); and the Annexation Party, which wants BC to become the 51st U.S. state. There are 45 parties registered with BC Elections in all.

The Creepiest Party award goes to the Western Canada Concept Party. Their objectives include "preservation of our Christian culture and European heritage." The Most Trifling Party: Your Party, which comes off as a high-school civics project. There's also the Millionaires Party, and The Idealists Party. Basically, in BC, if you've got an idea (sort of) and run one candidate two elections in a row, - presto vivace, you've got a political party.

More on some of the BC fringe parties, from the Victoria Times-Colonist.

And The Globe and Mail:

The B.C. Sex Party thinks public schools should teach youths to enjoy sex and masturbate. The Work Less Party says the North American rat race is shortening our lives and wrecking the environment. Then there is the Annexation Party of B.C., which posits that British Columbia would thrive better as the 51st state of the United States.

They are the fringe and single-issue parties with platforms ranging from myopic to out there. Apart from B.C.'s front-running Liberal and New Democratic Parties, there are 43 other registered political parties, a record number in the province. In the 2001 election, there were 33 parties. By contrast, Ontario has nine registered parties, the same number as in Quebec. Next door to British Columbia, in Alberta, there are 11.

....On Tuesday, pyjama-clad members of the Work Less Party of B.C., staged a "sleep in" on the steps of the legislature in Victoria. The Sex Party is planning a fundraiser at a Vancouver bar, billed as an art installation featuring a couple engaged in sex behind a partially transparent blind. B.C.'s Liquor Control and Licensing Branch is not amused and has refused to license the event.

....Opinion varies on why British Columbia has spawned so many political movements. The B.C. flakiness factor can't be counted out....."There is the local nuttiness that is endemic to B.C.," University of British Columbia professor Richard Johnston said. The fact that B.C.'s rules on registering political parties are among the most lax in the country is another factor. To register, a party only has to run two candidates in two consecutive provincial elections, said Elections B.C. spokeswoman Jennifer Miller.

I've got some bad news for the Annexation Party, much as I like their fairly common-sense, states rights, low-tax, pro-growth platform: we don't want BC as our 51st State. I think it might be feasible for Vancouver to become a sovereign nation, however.

Hey Matt,

Just wrote a note to someone else which I've cut and pasted below which may give you a better picture of Who and What Annexation BC is. We are a new start up party, so opoligize we're in desperate need of a website update. Until then read on:

As unthinkable as it may be for some to consider the goal of the Annexation Party of British Columbia (Annexation BC) is to remove the invisible line Britain drew in the dirt that continues to separate family and friends and has outlived any usefulness it may have had. We wish to form closer ties with the United States (US) and begin diplomatic negotiations to form a new North American Union of States, perhaps similar to that of the European Union (EU), which would include some, if not all, of the CDN provinces and territories. This is not a new and unproven path, but the vision of many like George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. It will be accomplished with the VOICE and input of all CDN and US citizens and their elected representatives. Quite often separation is the result of differences, union the outcome of similarities.

We do believe in giving it one more “Kick at the Canadian Can” but if Ottawa fails to incorporate a system where, “We the People” are in control and have a greater “VOICE” in our own political and economic affairs then talks and negotiations will cease and Annexation BC and the people who have empowered them, will initiate separation from CDN Confederation. The CHOICE to remain independent, or the CHOICE to join the Union of States will be up to the people of BC.

We believe that Quebec will separate and break up Canada. Then another new North America will evolve whether we like it or not. Then, or before then, we hope to be sending BC’s elected representatives to the table that most affects us in Washington, DC rather than Ottawa. Most would agree at the rate that the US is buying us up and our politicians are selling BC off, that within ten to fifteen years we will in one form or another be part of the US.

From Alaska and BC through to California we are the same people. The same holds true for the ranchers and oilmen of Alberta to Texas, the CDN Prairies and US Midwest, Bay Street to Wall Street, Maritimes to Key West and Montreal to New Orleans. Our trade, commerce, migration and similarities have always been North to South and our differences East to West.

As painful as it may be to accept, history has proven beyond any doubt that Ottawa will continue to abuse and take advantage of our love and loyalty to Canada. That is why it only makes sense to request an equal seat at the US table by seeking and negotiating statehood. BC is our home and we must obtain a voice in molding its future and the responsible management of our natural resources and environment.

Our goal is to adopt a solid foundation on which to build a strong and prosperous new state of BC. The 200+-year-old US system, which was founded “By, For, and Of the People”, works. It may not be a perfect system, but together we can improve on it. It is a lot better than our present CDN system where “Ottawa gets the Mine and BC gets the Shaft.” It is unbelievably ridiculous and irresponsible to sit idly by dreaming Ottawa has BC’s, or Western Canada’s, best interests at heart.

BC can, and should, be the richest, most prosperous place on earth with the lowest taxes and the best world-class health care and education system on earth. Instead many of our citizens can no longer survive on Ottawa’s empty promises and heavy taxation and are leaving for the US.

The truth is never popular, but for the sake of our next generation we must quit feeding on the fantasies of Ottawa’s promises and face the cold, hard facts of history and Ottawa’s track record. Ignorance is bliss, but only temporarily. We must quit voting for the “Freebies” and “Handouts” by which CDN politicians and Ottawa buy us into slavery and take control of our future and density and get back to work. By uniting North America and linking Alaska and BC to the rest of the nation we will create long-term jobs, infrastructure, investment and prosperity and will soon become America’s newest frontier and the best state in the Union.

Imagine BC sitting at a table where we will finally have equal representation and play by all the same rules and responsibilities as our neighboring states. Then, and only then, will our accountable, elected representatives possess the tools and power to exact fair and positive change for BC. Many of the obstacles BC now faces in forestry, fisheries, etc will quickly disappear and for the first time we will experience true free trade. (Not to mention the end of the GST and relief from heavy CDN taxation.)

The way we see it, BC has two choices right now. We can stand up and claim what rightfully belongs to British Columbians so we have something for our children’s future and then seek and negotiate a seat at the US table. Or we can continue the loyal Canadian tradition of letting Ottawa drain us dry for their own benefit and then be picked up by the US for peanuts later.

It is now up to “We the Canadian People” to somehow retain and protect our home and identity in the new North America to come. Don’t think for a minute Ottawa will do it for you. If you’re waiting for the Canadian train to save you, I’m sorry to inform you that it already left the station and is now owned by the Americans.

Every day more and more Canadians and Americans and political leaders learn of and see merit to our practical, proven plan of action and equality. Our non-partisan message is spreading rapidly and evolving faster than we can update our start-up website. We hope to give British Columbians Other Choice, before it soon becomes the Only Choice.

Sincerely,

R. Gordon Brosseuk
