Proctor & Gamble's Canadian Diversity Efforts Fall Short
April 07, 2005
Proctor and Gamble celebrated diversity yesterday. Toronto employees feasted on "jerk pork, samosas, Romanian meatballs -- and, playfully, Fruit To Go from the gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgendered employees booth." This Globe and Mail article trumpets the formation of eight employee "affinity groups" within P&G Canada's workforce. There are other major benefits, as well, to working in an environment that is open and accepting of differences, said Jeff Straker, a member of the gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgendered employees group -- one of eight official "affinity groups" at P & G Canada. The others are the Asian Professional Network, the Black Professional Network, the Latino Network, the French Canadian Network, the Women's Leadership Council, the Christian Network, the Jewish Network. Very well, then. I hereby proclaim that P&G Canada's diversity efforts falls short. To embrace diversity more fully, P&G Canada should also create employee affinity groups for Parents; Eastern Europeans; South and Central Americans; Africans; Muslims; Buddhists; Goths; and Geeks. Anything less would seem to smack of institutional bias. Posted by Matt Rosenberg at April 7, 2005 12:51 PM Trackback Pings TrackBack URL for this entry: Comments:
Matt, you are damn straight on this one! My group (Guys who love small-batch bourbon whiskey) demands to be recognized! The truth is, the more you break into groups, the more disagreements you are going to have, and the less progress you are going to make. Posted by: Jerry Annis at April 7, 2005 07:44 PMOr, how about a group for fathers. Yes, a group for that maligned segment of our population that radical feminists would have you believe are composed primarily of wife beaters and dead beat dads. Posted by: DeadManVoting (aka Iguana) at April 7, 2005 11:45 PMAt the risk of going '80's here, gag-me-with-a-spoon. Not because I am prejudiced against any members of the affinity groups, but the notion as Jerry Annis points out below, the more clevage between ever smaller groups the more rancor, disagreements, and eventually lawsuits. Why can't they all be members of ONE group. Productive, happy P&G ee's ?? This only serves to highlight the urgent need for my proposed RedNeck Studies Dept at University. We desperately need diversity of thought, opinion and perspective in todays academic and corporate environments, not a balkanized comparison of family trees and proclivities better left in the privacy of our own bedrooms. -Spin Posted by: SpinDaddy at April 8, 2005 05:27 AMJerry: It pains me to say this, but I represent a faction within the GWLSBBW (Guys Who Love Small-Batch Bourbon Whiskey "affinity group". A division is in order, and we hope to accomplish this with as little rancor as possible. A number of us prefer to swill our small-batch bourbon whiskey left-handed. It needs to be noted here that left-handedness is GENETIC. It is not a lifestyle choice! SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER! And that stuff. Further, we feel that we have been excluded and discriminated against. We hope our new organization, LHGWLSBBW, will be able to peacefully coexist, but if not, we WILL protest your headquarters and generally harass passers-by! I don't expect you to know what JHGWLSBBW stands for. It's a left-handed thing. You wouldn't understand. Posted by: Jeff Brazill at April 8, 2005 07:24 AMWell, this is all fine and good. But when are the Nordic left handed stuttering Hummer driving transexuals going to get a fair shake at P&G? Posted by: Gary B at April 8, 2005 09:31 AMYeah MAN ! ! That's right! What about the Nordic left handed stuttering Hummer...err-uhh, what was it we were supposed to be here protesting man?? Hey man, is that tofu? Can I have some? (Overheard at a recent rent-a-mob event protesting the unfair corporate practices of P & G) -SpinDaddy ;) Posted by: SpinDaddy at April 9, 2005 09:03 AMi dont like to give u any comment but i dont like rules of live that small fish many time taken by big fish i mean u acqire gilletee and gillette acqire ,many conpany Posted by: james at April 19, 2005 01:19 AMPost a comment
