Seattle Weakly Readers: No "Best Conservative"

August 04, 2004

That's according to the their "Best of 2004, Readers' Picks."

They do nominate tin-foil hat king U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott as "Best Liberal," though. And for best activist: David Goldstein, a guy who gained fame (Seattle-style) deriding tax-cut initiative honcho Tim Eyman as a "Horse's Ass."

That's watcha get from The Weakly's 20- to 50-something readership of hemp-wearing, bicycle-riding, tofu-snorting, childless, 113-pound Trustafarians, and unreconstructed Deaniacs.

Hey, y'all! Icky, scary OTHERS are all around you, even in Seattle! They've just tended to keep their heads down, lest they be pelted with seitan cutlets. Less so these days though, praise Ja.

Here are a few tips, Weakly readers, for "Best Local Conservative" next time around.

Let's start with the obvious: a couple of excellent local conservative newspaper columnists, who never fail to get local lefties in a fierce froth: Bruce Ramsey and Collin Levey. Plus youngblood Chris Collins.

Local think tanks: Discovery Institute and the Washington Policy Center.

Local bloggers: Stefan Sharkansky, Brian Crouch, Andy MacDonald, Jim Miller, and James J. Na.

Not to mention Timothy Goddard and P. Scott Cummins.

And local black conservative bloggers: Ambra Nykol and Kevin Leo.

Last but not least - a pedigreed conservative I know and admire - even if I don't always agree with everything he says: local think tank potentate, author and ex-military officer Philip Gold, who published this anti-Iraq-war, anti-Left piece in the, ah, Seattle Weekly.

UPDATE: There is another Seattle-area black conservative blogger - Robert, of The Mulatto Advocate. Good site; check it out. Thanks, Ambra.

Wow, can I put this on my resume?: Named one of the "best local conservatives" by RosenBlog. I'm honored.

Matt,
Y'see, it's like this: the progression if these positive adjectives is good, better, best. And <Fe>everyone knows that there's no such thing as a good conservative,</Fe> thus, there can be no "Best Conservative." QED.

Note: <Fe> is a pseudo-HTML tag for irony.

First off, it never ceases to amaze me how people who leave idiotic comments never have the balls to back it up by at least leaving an email address. Puh-lease.

So Matt, I'm gonna trackback on this, but thanks for the nod. Now, um, in terms of black conserv bloggers, are there really only two? That is SO sad. can't say I'm shocked.

Posted by: Ambra Nykol at August 5, 2004 08:39 AM

Ambra, perhaps there are a few more black conservative bloggers in or around Seattle, but none are leaping to mind. Let me know if you discover any. Right now, I think you and Kevin are leading that parade.

Posted by: Matt Rosenberg at August 5, 2004 10:30 AM

Actually Matt, I think you're right. Surely they would have exposed themselves by now. Anway, thanks for bringing this oversight to our attention.

Posted by: Ambra Nykol at August 5, 2004 11:13 AM

Even though I check out the Seattle Weekly from time to time, I'm betting the portion of leftist leaning readers far exceeds those of us who have a conservative bent. That being said, how could anybody take seriously the opinion about who is the "best conservative" from those who also believe Jim McDermott is the "best liberal." By celebrating such an ineffective posturing clown as the "best Liberal," they call into question their own judgment and reasoning ability.

Conservatives are from Earth, Leftists only inhabit the orbit of some distant planet.

Posted by: Gary B at August 5, 2004 12:23 PM

Aw, gee, thanks.

And, if I may return the compliment, I think the Weekly should also include one of the best Seattle Times contributors, this blog's proprietor.

Posted by: Jim Miller at August 5, 2004 02:28 PM

Okay I knew I was forgetting someone. There is another black Seattle blogger I can bring to your attention Robert of The Mulatto Advocate is a local too. Very much on point if I may say so myself.

Anyhoo, just thought I'd throw that in.

Ambra, thanks for the link and the compliment.

I've been playing with the idea of a "Cascade League" of Seattle area conservative bloggers. I even started playing with a logo design in Photoshop...

Let me know what you all think.

Robert:

Personally, I think that sounds like an excellent idea.

While it's already possible to go to various conservative-leaning Puget Sound blogs -and, via their individual blogrolls - find other like-minded bloggers in our region and/or state, there is still not an explicit (as it were) portal for conservative Puget Sound sound blog sites. To my knowledge, at least.

Please keep me posted. I'd certainly be interested in blogrolling and touting a regional conservative blog portal, such as you mention.

There are more of us out here (including in Seattle) than many folk suspect, and we need to continue to aggregate, and cross-market.

A rising star: There is a young conservative from Puyallup who is very articulate and getting national attention. Hans Zeiger is now a student at Hillsdale College in Michigan, so we don't see him. Here is a column of his on the Seattle Times Next page (teen opinion): http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/texis.cgi/web/vortex/display?slug=nexteconomics04&date=20040403&query=hans+zeiger

The list of publications he has appeared on is long: http://www.hanszeiger.com/

I agree, Matt should be in the list of nominees for Best Local Conservative.

That seitan stuff is nasty, by the way.

Posted by: Stefan Sharkansky at August 6, 2004 11:39 AM

I think after you see P. Scott Cummins' recent blog/article about "activist" judges in our area, he would rank right up there as a best local conservative, right with Matt. Of course, I'm biased as Scott is my neighbor.

Regardless, it is important to notice our local conservatives that remain conservative with a liberal leaning in oh-so-treehugger Seattle.

The Washington Research Council, headed by the able Dick Davis, should be added to the list of local think tanks. See their work at researchcouncil.org.

Posted by: J. Archer at August 7, 2004 02:02 PM

Thanks, dude.
I nominate Mary Radcliffe. She works with the homeless almost daily, put herself through college as a single mom. She's active in a hundred places in Seattle, and was the driving force behind I-200 although John Carlson got all the credit.
Or Wayne Perryman, reverend, talk-show host, activist, community center leader, author, and Martin Luther King sound-alike. He wrote "Unfounded Loyalty," about African-Americans and democrats.

The Seattle Weekly is becoming a ragsheet.

Posted by: Bleeding heart conservative at August 10, 2004 10:52 AM

Brian,

Agreed. Wayne Perryman does hold his own. If only he had a blog...

Readers, thanks for all your excellent suggestions. Feel free to add more.

Posted by: Matt R. at August 12, 2004 08:43 AM

Matt... I couldn't help but note a dismissive tone in your comments on my selection as Best Activist/Hell-Raiser in the Weekly's "Best of Seattle" poll. I won't bother to defend myself (talk to the senior members of the Capitol press corps and ask their opinion,) but I think you entirely missed the point: the Best of Seattle poll is entirely bogus!

Eyman won the category last year, and turned it into a fundraising email. So this year I emailed my list and asked them to stick it to Tim by selecting me instead. I couldn't have gotten more than a couple hundred votes... possibly much less.

The reader's poll is a joke, and I suspect many categories received even fewer votes than mine. In fact, I'm thinking next year, I'll ask my list to select me as "Best Conservative" just to prove the point. (Or maybe, "Best Fish Market.")

Speaking of "local" conservatives, I have to take issue with your nomination of Collin Levey, who is really little more than a right-wing media echo chamber automaton. Now I can forgive columnists with bad opinions... it's the bad writing that drives me nuts.

She is so intent on slavishly packing RNC talking points into her columns, that I often find myself lost between paragraphs, convinced that I've skipped a page.

Collin’s noncontiguous narrative is exacerbated by her minimalist segues, which often consist of little more than a carriage return and a linefeed. Indeed, many of her columns read like they were chopped up and reassembled by some deranged, Dadaist editor.

But perhaps the biggest reason to disqualify her as best "local" conservative is that, apart from her mailing address, there is absolutely nothing local about her. I challenge you to find me a column in the last few months where she provides any local perspective, explores the local impact of national issues, or draws on local history, people or events to color her commentaries.

As far as I'm concerned, she's a syndicated columnist without the syndication.
