Bush Shore Cain't Talk Purty
July 09, 2004
Another day, another article about polarization in American politics. But this one is special, featuring as it does the insights of one Lee Bondurant, from suburban Seattle. "I don't like Bush," said...Bondurant, a political independent who was laid off from his job at Boeing in 2002 and now teaches computer-aided drafting to college students. "Because he ain't got no smarts. Just listen to the way he speaks." Was that a Bondurant-ism? Bush-loathers have also been fighting the good fight for George near Seattle on tony Bainbridge Island. In a July 4 parade there, a young Iraq war vet got a bilious reception from the crowd. Seattle Post-Intelligencer columnist Robert Jamieson wrote about it today. Puget Sound blogger Brian Crouch has this value-added post. Posted by Matt Rosenberg at July 9, 2004 12:33 PM Trackback Pings TrackBack URL for this entry: Comments:
I visited some friends last spring who live on Bainbridge Island. My wife and I went to dinner and to a student written play that featured their daughter in a small part. The play featured the trials of a man who went from tragedy to tragedy. He lost his son in a war. Of course, the son was killed by friendly fire and three of his fellow soldiers put in an appearance. These characters were drunk, high and playing with weapons like they were toys. They were so stoned, they were laughing about their comrades death. I was so disgusted, I walked out of the performance. Even my wife was confused by my behavior. You see, these kinds of attitudes have become so mainstream in the Seattle area, they become part of the expected natural background. It wasn't until I pointed out those disrespectful thugs these people see as the military, that my wife even realized anything was out of the ordinary. It's not just Seattle that is politically retarded. Sorry Matt, I just love that phrase you coined. Posted by: Gary B at July 9, 2004 07:04 PMWell, Bush cain't talk purty, and that is a problem. Bush's colloquialisms may endear him to the hearts of middle America, but they make some people doubt his intelligence. Notwithstanding the fact that he made it to the ultimate post in politics, or a list of his achievments so far. The "sheeple" (thanks for that word Bobby) will vote for someone because the way he talks is "cool." Remember Clinton? An amazing number of my associates said they voted for him because he "played the sax, and that was cool." The liberals attempt to "get out the young vote" uses that same intimation. Why do you think Kerry is saying things like, "We have better hair." Start 'em young, like the tobacco companies. If Kerry wants the intelligent vote, he and his constituants need to start giving their "contract with America" instead of bashing Bush. (like the hollywood types did at a recent Dem fundraiser) Maybe they don't, because that ticket really has nothing to offer. The new question I hear is, "Who is that guy standing by John Edwards in all those pictures?" Bush may not be eloquent, but at least I know where he stands on the issues. I would rather have my mouth duct-taped around the exhaust pipe of a bus in the Mohave, and be drug naked through a cactus patch in that heat while a blaring loudspeaker bombards me with Gregorian chants, than have to try and explain to one more intellectual midget why being "cool" isn't a good enough reason to vote for a President.
