In the Shadow of Shasta

June 21, 2004

Blogging from beeyooteeful Mt. Shasta, CA - the town at the foot of the namesake, 14,000-some-foot mass of rock and snow. Managed to get all the way down here Saturday, with a four-hour rest stop in the sweet burg of Ashland, Oregon. Where there's lithium in the water and The Bard all about.

Overheard this conversation:

Local Teen 1: I Hate the Oregon Coast.
Local Teen 2: The Oregon Coast Sucks.
Local Teen 3: Oregon Sucks.

Dudes, If you only knew what you had. But then, this is de riguer. I may be a naive, cockeyed optimist. I think there's a fairly good likelihood that our son, now almost eight, and daughter, four, will still be in love with Seattle - or whatever other great place we may choose to live - when they're teens. I also think the odds are very good they won't be sullen and alienated, either.

Tell me I'm not dreaming. Or that in fact, I am deluded.

The Oregon Coast kicks the Washington Coast's ass. I can testify to that because I lived in Oregon for 18 years and went to the coast at least a few times a year. Sure, it's cold, but it's beautiful, and the beaches aren't polluted. The California kids are probably just too sissy to go to the beach on a cold day.

My wife and I recently did the PCH thing all the way to San Jose from Seattle. We were very surprised by how beautiful Oregon beaches were.

Sure, California has dramatic cliffs and vistas, but Oregon had very jagged and neat coastline.

People say that Seattle/Western Washington used to be the best kept secret (When? When your car was the only one on I-5?), but it appears to me that Western Oregon is where it is today.

The only thing that bothered us was the silly socialistic idea that forcing gas attendants on drivers creates jobs. What it does is increase gas prices and/or cost of doing business.

On the other hand, Western Oregon appears even friendlier to dogs and their owners. Our two rascals were welcomed everywhere (including the beaches!).

If we get annoyed enough with Seattle one day (though we must admit we quite like the place today), we may just buy a beachfront home in Southern Oregon and move.

James, if you do eventually move to the Oregon Coast, make sure to get a place with extra square footage. In reurn for free vacation digs, we will do all the cooking and yard work. I recommend Beach Loop Drive in Bandon. And there's even a conservative think tank in Bandon (I forget the name at present).

Oregon Coast sux I am in Astoria right now and It is absolutely ridiculous. Who in their right minds would want to sit inside and watch it rain 80% of the time. It is always gloomy and the beaches are like goin to the beach in Cali, Gulf coast or east coast on a shitty day. A lot of people are overwieght, there is rampant meth problems, and the sun rarely comes out.(opinion) Not to mention it is way to quiet out here I don't know about the southern coast but it cant be too much better.

the california coast kicks butt on both oregon and washington. oregon is filled with hippy scum and many areas are clear cut, washington coast is clear cut and filled with hicks and hippies. the calif coast rocks, everything else sucks.
