Lament of a Cafeteria Democrat

June 16, 2004

At dinner with friends recently, SF Chron op-ed contributor M.M. Acosta made the mistake of saying she thought Michael Jackson actually had done snarky things with kids, as alleged. Hoo boy! She got quite a reaction. And it made her think.

Oh, my. She needs to get some new friends.

So now I understand why, according to my kid's Government teacher, she didn't speak up in class. My husband and I are nice people. We don't yell and scream. Who knew we were doing the kid such a disservice. She's 17 now - is it too late to fix?

I fear the window may be closed. You could always force feed her TiVos of Jerry Springer, tho! Might turn the trick.

She ends with Emerson's "speak what you think today in words as hard as canon balls" and yet when her guest wants to show and tell she writes "you can't exactly say no"..WHY NOT? It was HER house, HER dinner table and HER place to say : "NO,not here, not now". Long before she spoke out about Michael Jackson she had the power to prevent the display at the table.
And didn't use it.
