Fighting Filth
June 09, 2004
It's a dirty, dirty, world. And it's my duty to let you know about it. I've diligently rounded up stories about germs and filth, for your prophylactic edification. No links on public toilets, old folks living in squalor, SARS, flesh-eating bacteria or public beach closures. Not yet. Your doctor may wash his hands for each new patient, but he can't wash his germy necktie, which may carry all kinds of icky stuff on it from previous patients seen that same day. Makes ya wonder about doc's white coat too, huh? If you read this next piece carefully, you'll never look at a hotel room TV remote the same way. Or touch one. Shopping carts are another minefield, as reported here, and here. From Utah comes this recent report that jetted tubs are truly disgusting. And some school cafeterias? Pheee-eeew! Pack your kid a sack lunch. Truckee, Nevada celebrates the historical role of filth, and cleans it up. This guy asserts illegal border-crossers are leaving piles of trash and human waste behind. Not such good citizens, huh? But Kenya's got real problems. Today's handy tip: If you're worried about food poisoning, eat a bunch or two of cilantro. And Mom was right. Wash your hands! Ewwwww... I was just in a hotel over the weekend, and I used the remote! AAAAAAA! Posted by: Bonnie at June 9, 2004 02:10 PMEwwwwwwwww! is right ! People who spy on restrooms say men don't wash their hands nearly as often as the women do. And what about doorknobs? They're reputed to be THE dirtiest things around! And I don't like cilantro! waaaaaaaaaaah! what's a person to do???????? Posted by: Lorna at June 9, 2004 02:20 PMNot that this has made me a germaphobe or anything, but... Does anybody know where I can buy one of those personal plastic bubbles to live in? Posted by: just me at June 9, 2004 04:03 PMPeople who spy on restrooms? Man-bashing? Who do you hang out with Lorna? j/k :) The average attitude of a guy is, "it's mine, I know where it's been." Or sometimes they will say, "it's inside my pants, that makes it cleaner than my hands." (so they are less likely to wash their hands) What they fail to realize is, when you flush in a public toilet... they are touching everyone else's as well! Yuck! I work in a multicultural environment. People from all over are using the restroom and even if they are clean: they bring germs that are indigenous to their home, to our bathroom. My body isn't used to them, and has to build the immunity. Simply washing my hands, and opening the door using the paper towel I dry them with, has reduced the amount of "punies" I get by 70% (Ok, Lorna, I always did wash my hands, that isn't new, just the paper towel door thing) I hate those blow dryers in some restrooms, I still have to open the door barehanded! I don't have a phobia (glad you can't see my eye twitch) but I carry Lysol with me to hotels and use it liberally. I wonder if anyone will notice the latex exam gloves I'll wear on the next vacation? Gee, thanks Matt. I guess the only way to have absolutely safe sex in a hotel would be to cocoon your entire body in Saran-Wrap, huh? Posted by: rross at June 10, 2004 04:24 AMHello there rross! The Seattle Times reported the handwashing (or lack thereof) just the other day. What I (and granddaughters) do is we pull our sleeve over the hand that opens a door to say, the schoolroom, or hem of a sweater. I hate the blower things, too, but again, using part of your clothing you CAN open the restroom door without using bare hands (or take extra TP from the room and use it). If all this sounds excessive we have found a big reward: NO colds or flu for many years, even tho around little kids for all of the school term. Posted by: Lorna at June 10, 2004 06:04 AMThat's a good idea Lorna, thanks. (I just gotta remember not to wipe my nose with that cuff afterwards!) I hadn't thought of it, but schools would have the same "germs I'm not used to" problem that my industry does. Maybe that's why the teachers I know are always feeling ucky. (they blame the weather usually) Posted by: rross at June 10, 2004 07:55 AMPost a comment
