Freedom: You Can Just Taste It
May 31, 2004
Western values and food are ascendant in Eastern Europe, 15 years after Communist regimes were extirpated. A good thing, too. Apart from the usual overcooked meat, potatoes and dumplings; delicacies under The Reds included spaghetti made of limp noodles, ketchup and shredded cheese. Pizza was "thick yeast cake topped with vegetables and ketchup." Another favorite: fried cheese with mayonnaise. Now: grilled salmon with strawberry sauce; herbs and spices; avocados; and exotic items such as asparagus and broccoli. Before long: piroshky filled with sea urchin; and Slivovitz tastings. Another beachfront for the bar-b-que? Pass the Aussie reds. Posted by: Gary B at May 31, 2004 06:29 PMOr Spanish Reds, which can be great. They don't quite deserve it after recent events. But, oh hell. The French have truly earned a boycott. Rhone blends on hold. Napa substitutes working fine. GBA. Posted by: Matt Rosenberg at May 31, 2004 06:51 PMPost a comment
