Am I Blue?
May 27, 2004
Netscape (remember them?) still has an online news digest. I'm not sure they should. This summary of a study on the benefits of listening to music shows they need better editors. First, they say listening to music will do a lot of good things for your mood, including "vanishing" feelings of sadness. Then, right after that, they say listening to music won't erase a number of problematic emotions, including the afore-mentioned "sadness." Which is it, guys? I'd hazard that it all depends on the music. Gimme some Latin jazz or Township Jive from South Africa to chase away the blues. But not blues. Unless it's really upbeat, and about drinking. Which of course causes short-term euphoria followed by.....sadness. Posted by Matt Rosenberg at May 27, 2004 06:11 PM Trackback Pings TrackBack URL for this entry: Comments:
Any recommendations for starter Latin Jazz albums? Posted by: cornflux at May 27, 2004 09:49 PMCornflux, there's a query that sent me bounding upstairs to my CD collection right away. Happy to recommend a few Latin jazz favorites. Poncho Sanchez, "Conga Blue;" Africando, "Vol. 2 - Tierra Tradicional." In my book, this is a "10 CDs of all time for the desert island" pick. Just exceptional singing, arrangements and playing. The vocalists are actually from Senegal, the instrumentalists from Puerto Rico. Cal Tjader and Eddie Palmieri, "El Sonido Nuevo." Mongo Santamaria, "Mongo Explodes/Watermelon Man" Two choice 60s LPs on one CD, from top Latin bandleader/percussionist. Big, tight orchestra. The CD is about 2/3ds great stuff, the rest OK (some slightly cheesy arrangements on these ones). Still highly recommended. Posted by: Matt Rosenberg at May 27, 2004 10:22 PMMy recommendation for chasing the blues away? Go on a long walk! Speak to every person you meet along the way plus any dogs or cats you see in yards. You'll love it ! Posted by: Lorna at May 28, 2004 05:38 AMMatt, thanks for the recommendations; I'll drop you a note when I check them out. Lorna, Lorna, Lorna... please tell me you're joking... Posted by: cornflux at May 28, 2004 09:37 PMNo, not joking, Matt! I do it all the time, l3 miles yesterday alone. No kidding. Wear headphones if you hafta have bluesy music, but you'd be missing out on something better...meeting people and animals. Posted by: Lorna at May 29, 2004 02:17 AMLorna, you know those funny looks you get? They mean something... ;) Posted by: cornflux at May 29, 2004 09:59 AMHi Corny ! so far, haven't noticed any funny looks, sorry! Maybe you're just jealous eh? (that's pronounced A) Posted by: Lorna at May 29, 2004 08:16 PMIn Lorna's defense, I should note that I too, speak to strange cats. I'm a bit more circumspect with dogs. And Cornflux, two more latin jazz CDs definitely belong on my list of requested recommendations for you. Hilton Ruiz, El Camino Abierto. Noted pianist leads great session. Lyrical tunes; great guitar, horns, piano and percussion. Very snazzy stuff. Struttin' music. Orlando Cachaito Lopez, title is sort of vague, seems to be "Orlando Cachiato Lopez" or "Cachaito." Was released in 2001 on the Nonesuch/World Circuit label. About the coolest Latin jazz-influenced CD ever made. Lotta traditional Afro-Cuban jazz roots, but very funky and modern, even a little bit of hip-hop flavor(no angry rappers, don't worry). Lopez played upright bass on the smash Buena Vista Social Club CD. This CD just sizzles from start to finish; he's accompanied by killer musicians. We've given it as a gift to a number of folks, all have loved it. A Do Not Miss pick. Posted by: Matt Rosenberg at May 30, 2004 12:06 PMPost a comment
