It's a Wrap

Do Phish begin to smell after two decades? Trey Anastasio and crew think so. The popular jam-band will call it quits after this summer's tour. They reeled off some tasty licks in their time, but know their shtick is played; no matter how many Deadhead wanna-bes follow them around the country.

I've got one Phish CD. I like it. And it's plenty, thanks.

UPDATE: In the comment string to this post, Naarski reminds that a creepy incident just last August involving Phish bassist Mike Gordon can't have added to the veteran band's mojo very much. Here's what was reported. Backstage at a Jones Beach, New York Grateful Dead concert, long-time film and photo buff Gordon disappeared into a dark, secluded nearby boathouse with the nine-year-old daughter of a Hell's Angel to take what he later termed "art pictures."

The girl's absence from backstage was noticed, she and Gordon were found, and he was beaten up by Hell's Angels. Gordon was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and trespassing, but the case quietly died. Naarski offers a tongue-in-cheek "conspiracy theory," including this: Hell's Angels controlled the drug concession at Phish concerts, and wanted to keep the peace after administering their own brand of justice to Gordon.

According to a variety of reports I Googled up (including this and this and this) there was no indication of any child molestation. The emphasis was on, ah, moving on.

For more, see this post from Chronic Murmuring, a blog by "a recovering theological prick." Nota bene the comments.

Do you think Phish is calling it quits because one of the members was busted making out with a child (under 15 yrs old) belonging to the Hell's Angels behind a Honey Bucket after one of their concerts? Then, he was beat up very badly, sent to the hospital and oddly enough the charges that the police had against him for child rape were dropped? Conspiracy theory coming right now: Hellís Angels had the exclusive to deal drugs at Phish concerts (you would have to be high to sit thru that crap). One of the band members was brought drugs by one of the Hellís Angelsí children. He then took the liberty to molest a child. The Hellís Angels found out about it, beat the crap out of him. The police came, called an ambulance and he was sent to the emergency room. The police charged him with child rape. But, knowing that the Hellís Angels would be implicated as selling drugs and they would lose their exclusive drug selling business at the Phish concerts, they would not testify and made the child retract her statements. Now, Phish has a rep of being a poor manís Grateful Dead. They want to just end it and I agree with their decision.

In case it isn't self-evident, Naarski has no idea what he's talking about.

Thanks for posting the real story Matt. I forget that people actually enjoy Phish and should have looked up the story to get the facts surrounding the incident with the child correct. Regardless, my conspiracy theory was meant to be humorous. However, there is good news for all of you... Jason reminded me that I have no career in comedy.

Well Rosenberg, it's sad to see yet another journalist turned off by the fact a band has been enormously important to so many, while sailing right over your shallow head. Perhaps you should stick to topics you do know about. For instance financial matters, stealing land from Palestinians, or absolute control of the media.

Hey dick (naarski), if you wanna post a message like that one get your facts straight. Mike Gordon was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and tresspassing (not child rape, jerkwad). Also, you said after one of their concerts. Assuming you meant Phish, you're wrong again shmuck. It was a "the Dead" concert that Mike had been invited to by the band. Mike has been known to enjoy the art of photography and this is what he has claimed to have been doing with the girl. Now, whether or not Mike was indeed "making out" with the 9 year old girl, I don't know. However nobody saw Mike and the girl making out. That was just a suspicion. And furthermore, in attacking Phish's music, you just look like an idiot bias by the fact that you don't like Phish. I think people should be allowed to express their opinions, but only if their not opinionated basterds who jump to conclusions like yourself. That is all. Thanks. Once again, you are a dick
