Jebspam
May 24, 2004
For at least the third time in recent weeks I've received this e-mail from Florida Gov. Jeb Bush; even though I categorically have NOT e-mailed him. It reads: This serves as an immediate means to acknowledge my receipt of your message. I am currently experiencing a large volume of e-mails, and your questions will be answered as soon as possible. Jeb, dude, my only question is why you keep sending me this whack e-mail. Actually, I've got a comment, too. If I HAD been seeking an answer from you, by now I'd be fairly pissed that all I get is this same form e-mail telling me you're too busy to reply. If you'd like a top-to-bottom audit of your gubernatorial communications apparatus - which you seem to need - I will be happy to respond to an RFP. If minority contractor criteria are a concern, I believe I qualify, as a Ukranian-Irish Seattle conservative work-at-home father. Don't you think it would be better for you to be irritated at the person who is spoofing your email address and using that to send various emails to Gov. Bush? Posted by: Plunge at May 26, 2004 06:15 AMPlunge, you raise a good point. Which leads me to wonder - why in the world would anyone want to send an-email to Jeb Bush pretending to be from me, a Seattle-based freelance journalist? Must be some folks with WAY too much time on their hands out there. Posted by: Matt Rosenberg at May 26, 2004 07:35 AMI'd be concerned about what was written in your name. Knowing you are conservative, the Left often resorts to diabolical means to get back at people they are pissed off at. They could be sending Jeb a nasty note. Thus the form letter, signifying Jeb won't sink to the level of responding to such stupidity. Maybe you should write him and tell him someone is using your email. Request them to forward you and emails from you. It could demand legal action. IP addresses are great trackers. Scott Posted by: Slant Point at May 26, 2004 09:28 AMUm, do you think this could maybe be virus-related spoofed mail, and he just has an autoresponder running? Maybe? Posted by: bleah at May 26, 2004 10:51 AMI just spoke to Guv's office and they say they will check and see what, if anything, has been sent to them with my e-mail as a (fake) return address. Whatever exactly is going on, I'll try to find out and update here as more info becomes available. Thanks to all for sharing your knowledge. Gotta admit, this is a new one for me. Posted by: Matt Rosenberg at May 26, 2004 11:05 AMOK, here's the deal, according to Gov. Bush's office. They checked, and report back to me that they have received no e-mail bearing my return address. Which would tend to rule out the plausible suspicion someone is spoofing me. I have asked if they could check further on why I have received several e-mails from the Gov. saying he could not reply to some (unspecified)e-mailed question I never actually posed. We'll see if they have more info to share. My offer a top-to-bottom communications audit still stands. And of course I can bring in an IT subcontractor cause' that sure ain't my speciality).
