Pro Forma White Guilt

May 17, 2004

Enough paint-by-numbers stuff already about Brown vs. the Board of Ed, as discussed in this link. Thanks, Burton Terrace for the heads up about about more shameless pandering by John Kerry - ever seeking symbolic gravitas, and ever the lost, pompous fool.

Ever notice how "White Guilt" is only directed at, say, underperforming African-Americans?

Asians (mainly Chinese) were used basically as slaves to build the railroads. They were not even allowed to have wives (or women, period). Asians could not even own land in some states until quite recently (after WWII -- long after other "races of color" had such rights). There were anti-Japanese and anti-Chinese leagues, particularly on the West Coast, long after belonging to the KKK disappeared from "polite company."

Yet, no "White Guilt." What's that about?

Simple, Asian-Americans have largely assimilated into the mainstream culture and become successful Americans. They have higher average income than whites and score higher on standardized tests (yeah, you know, those really biased math and English tests that favor whites only).

In other words, Asians present the pro-(so called) affirmative action crowd ("look at me, I'm a white man with conscience") with an inconvenient fact that dispels their flawed notions regarding "race." Next time you watch or read media coverage about race, see how it is always framed in "white vs. black" construct as if Asians don't exist. Because Asians and their story are inconvenient to the inequality-mongers.

That's why.

For the record, I am an Asian immigrant. But you know what? I always think of myself as American first and whatever other label second. That's the way it should be and certainly that is the way all the public institutions should treat everyone of us, instead of dividing us into pseudo-scientific categories of "race" that originates from racialist quack science of the 19th Century.

And Asians are ballsy too, James. Well put.

I agree with you about who cares about the asian story because there are some asians out performing whites. Most people seem to fall for the grouping of people as if they are one."White guilt" for example.I have seen "whites"throw rocks at the KKK,so to put people in categories such as asian, white and black is in away offensive.
