A Clinton-esque Moment For Bush?
May 08, 2004
I guess you could call it that. Difference being it wasn't calculated. Read the story and look at the picture of W. intimately and spontaneously comforting an Ohio teen who lost her mom on 9/11. Kinda leaves you with the impression that the guy is actually for real. There's none of Pappy's lame "Message, I Care," verbage here. As editors tell novelists: "Show; don't tell." George showed what he's about in this moment. Now if he would just turn loose the horsepower AND strategists to take care of business in Iraq. No, I don't believe it's not winnable. I saw this picture and thought of the recent photos of Kerry snowboarding and riding his bike decked out in Lycra. Kerry is trying to be someone his is not and Bush is someone many on the left believe his is not. And no, with all due respect, this is not a Clinton-esque moment for Bush. Haven't we finally realized those Clinton-esque moments were staged and insincere? The clever language and nuanced selection of words were only that. Clinton's political savvy and "adroit" positioning do have a political shelf life. The public that wants to continue to be fooled in the hope for election victory will continue to be fooled. The rest have moved on. 9/11 made us grow up. Maybe twinkes will still be fresh after many years, "Clinton-esqe" moments are made up of the stuff few people believe are genuine. Despite the demonization from the Left, the Bush PR machine is remarkably poor at capitalizing a moment like this, whereas the Clinton PR machine was without its equal in not only capitalizing a moment like this (which was, frankly, nonexistent given Clinton's moral cynicism) but at manufacturing such moments. That is the major problem with the Republicans in general -- they are not good at managing visceral, emotional moments in life (and I don't buy the notion that only leftism caters to emotions).
