Poll: Minnesotans Favor State Constitutional Amendment Banning Gay Marriage
April 06, 2004
More and more, gay marriage is looking like a tough sell. The latest from Minnesota: a Minneapolis Star-Tribune poll finds 58 percent of likely voters say they'd vote for a proposed state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. A current state law against same-sex marriage could still be challenged in court, without such an amendment. Let's keep in mind Minnesota has a long tradition of progressive politics. The state elected the late uber-liberal Paul Wellstone as Senator (before the Tri-Lateral Commission arranged for his plane to crash, that is). Minnesotans also elected as Governor (much to their later regret) former pro wrestler and third-party candidate Jesse Ventura. So the renewed sentiments of Minnesotans against gay marriage can't be written off by backers as though Minnesota were, say, Oklahoma. It's not. It does seem like Minneapolis has an anti-abortion billboard along every couple miles of freeway. They may be liberal, but I think they do have an undercurrent of church based traditional values. Posted by: Ken J at April 7, 2004 07:15 AMI am from MN (lived there from birth until 23 yrs old) and it has an interesting history. Although the majority of Minnesotans claim to be Catholic and Lutheran (almost an even split), they come from a German and/or Norwegian socialist upbringing, they go to church not out of conviction, but out of tradition. Why is this important? Because most baby boomers and older are die hard socialists and despite the façade, they are not “believers.” No kidding. Did you know that MN was the only state that tried to succeed from the US to become a socialist country? The tide is turning however and it started the year we moved away in 1998. The Gen X and Gen Y groups are turning ever more conservative which is why Coleman was elected (despite the left’s claim that the death of Wellstone was the only reason Coleman was elected), there is a Republican governor who helped increase 2nd Amendment rights, is spreading the hope in the state that the death penalty may one day be re-instated and now the homosexual marriage ban. MN has come along way in its recent move towards conservatism and needless to say, it is making my parents who still reside there very happy.
