On to the Slaughter

February 07, 2004

Kerry wins Washington and Michigan, reports AP, via Yahoo and Capitol Hill Blue.

Bring it on, as Dubya might say. Bush beats Kerry in November, barring another 9/11. His-less-than-perfect record aside, Bush knows who he is and what he believes in. Kerry is a blow-dried stiff, an aristocrat in search of an image, who doesn't know what he's about. A tip to George, though: ditch Cheney. He deserves it, and it'll make the going easier. Give Rudy a call.

I think Bush should drop Cheney from the 2004 ticket for different reasons. The conventional wisdom seems to indicate a vice-presidential pick helps broaden the tickets appeal (southern voters, moderation, foreign policy experience, etc.). While I discount the success of these strategies, I think they play a real role in the decisions of the political pros.

Cheney's role in 2000 was to provide the Bush ticket with prior Federal Government executive experience. Certainly no one can seriously doubt Bush's presidential leadership now even if you don't agree with his policies. Bush doesn't need these add-ons' from a VP this year.

The Republicans need to position their VP to run in 2008 against Hillary's almost certain candidacy. Though Rudi is a fiscal conservative and a social liberal, he'll likely appeal to Republican conservatives because of his leadership during the immediate aftermath of 9/11. New York is likely to move into the Republican column in 2008 with a Rudi candidacy. Without New York, the electoral college playing field tilts strongly against the Democratics.

Gary, I especially agree with you that in picking (or more accurately, re-evaluating) Bush's running mate this year, the GOP braintrust must be looking to 2008. You're dead-on: this year's VP pick needs to be someone who would come out of the gate in '08 as a strong Presidential candidate. Cheney's a total non-starter in this respect, while Giuliani would be very strong. I'm rubbing my hands together at the prospect of a Rudy-Hillary contest.

Rudy has some image, but the Bush's are all about allegiance to the family. Hence, Cheney, unless there's some obvious Enron liability.

Maybe you read the book, I haven't yet. Sounds like it's true. But if so re VP, that would still be dumb on their part. Cheney is just so much baggage, now.

Maybe the Republicans should drop Bush from the ticket and get someone that can speak coherently. Having someone that effectively led our country in the right direction would be great too, but after 4 years of Bush, I would settle for the former.
