Blog scores sleaze scoop

February 04, 2004

So what media outlet got the goods first on the Janet Jackson breast-baring "wardrobe malfunction" at the Super Bowl halftime show? A decidely non-mainstream blog, reports online journalism blogger Adrian Holovaty. Given the event's seismic - and beneficial - repercussions, alterting us all to the entrenched culture of sleaze we so gliby tolerate on most days, that's quite a piece of work. Here's Holovaty's report. Via Jeff Jarvis' buzzmachine.com.

Just repeating what Thomas Shapley, P-I editor has to say on the subject of TV:
JUST TURN THE DAMN THING OFF!

I agree, Lorna. Our (new) TV is in the basement rec room; it had been about 15 years since we got the last one. The living room is where all the LPs, CDs and some of the books are. I could never understand people who have TVs in the kitchen and bedroom, OR the living room. Our kids only watch videos that we approve; plus maybe some West Wing; and the "Arthur" cartoon show on TV.

I know the arguement, and it's true: if you pick and choose, there's quite a bit that's good on cable, such as The Sopranos, Sex and the City, Six Feet Under; some stuff on the cable movie channels; cooking shows. I've enjoyed such programming at other peoples' houses. But that's enough for me. I'd rather NetSurf, read, and read to my kids. Or play chess with my 7-year-old, who's beating me a little bit to often now (at chess).

Oh, you have GOT to start regularly reading FARK. It's the best-kept secret for serious news readers. Most of it is links to people doing stupid things and getting caught, but Drew's smart-ass way of stating even serious news, and those great icons next to each headline, are brilliant. When I was publishing an alternative paper, my top editor put FARK in our blogroll and I've been a fan of it ever since.
